Just two days after my Calgary shows, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of emotions and exhaustion that followed. Presenting Navjeevan live for the very first time was a deeply personal milestone. The physical tiredness, the spiritual release, the emotional waves, and the mental focus all combined into an experience that left me drained but fulfilled. Performing in Calgary meant far more than just playing music. It was a chance to revisit a difficult chapter of my life and reclaim some of the pain through the power of my art.
Returning to Calgary: Facing Old Challenges
Calgary holds a complicated place in my story. I don’t have a large community there, and the time I spent living in the city was very hard. Going back to perform was nerve-wracking. I worried about how the city would receive me and whether I could connect with an audience that didn’t know me well. But I also saw this as an opportunity to transform those difficult memories into something meaningful.
During those tough years, I made a firm commitment to my craft. I discovered the venue, Cold Garden Brewery, a community that believed in my vision and supported my journey. I found friends who lifted me up and embraced my story. Returning to Calgary with Navjeevan felt like coming full circle — a chance to honour that growth and healing.
Nine Months of Building Neutral Ground
Neutral Ground has been alive for nine months now. For most of that time, I’ve been the one packing up Secret Garden studio's setup, driving it to Cold Garden, and setting it up for other bands eager to perform. This time, the setup was for my own show. That shift felt surreal and empowering.
I traveled in the “magic school bus” with the crew: Barry on keys, Bobby on guitar, Steven on drums, and Stasia as our host. For the second show at The Lab, Rayray joined us on bass. It meant so much to have musicians who have played with me in different bands take time off work to support me in Calgary. Their presence made the experience feel like a true collaboration and celebration.
The Energy of Cold Garden and The Intimacy of The Lab
The Cold Garden show was electric. The room buzzed with energy as I shared my voice and the music I’ve been building with the Neutral Ground community. It felt incredible to connect with an audience that was fully present and engaged.
The next day, The Lab offered a different atmosphere — more intimate and reflective. I could feel the room listening deeply. People absorbed the stories behind each song, creating a shared space of understanding and empathy. Many attendees came through their connection to Alex, the visual artist who collaborated with me on the Navjeevan album art. Alex’s work is a huge part of this project, and seeing people connect with our collaboration was incredibly encouraging.
I took my shoes off and performed barefoot. Something about that space made me feel comfortable and confident enough to be fully myself. The Lab and their hardworking volunteers created an environment where vulnerability and authenticity could flourish.
Performing Navjeevan live was a way to reclaim my story and transform pain into something beautiful. Music gave me a voice to express what words alone could not. It allowed me to connect with others who might carry their own struggles.
This experience reminded me that healing is not linear. It involves revisiting old wounds, facing discomfort, and finding new meaning. Music can be a powerful companion on that journey, offering both release and connection.
Lessons from the Journey
Community matters: Finding people who believe in your vision can change everything. Cold Garden and the musicians who supported me made this experience possible.
Vulnerability creates connection: Sharing personal stories through music invites others to listen and relate.
Spaces shape experience: The energy of Cold Garden and the intimacy of The Lab each brought something unique to the performances.
Reclaiming pain is possible: Returning to a difficult place with new strength can transform past struggles into sources of power.
Moving Forward with Purpose
This Calgary experience has deepened my commitment to my craft and community. It showed me that even when the past feels heavy, there is room to grow and heal through creativity. I look forward to sharing more music, stories, and collaborations that continue this journey.
